The above five images were all taken in October/November 2002 using long exposures (ranging between about 2 and 20 seconds depending on the shot). They were also
primarily a test of whether a digital camera really can do anything that a film camera can. The "Traffic Lights" and "Jubilee at Night" images were taken with the camera mounted on a tripod. "Abstract 02" also had the camera mounted on a tripod aimed at one of the rather bizarre street lights that can be seen in the Jubilee picture. The camera's zoom lens was pulled across its entire range during the shot, and the image then colour-enhanced in PhotoShop and mirrored to create the symmetrical double exposure. The "Abstract 01" and "Firework Monster" images were both taken hand-held with c.8 second exposures. In "Abstract 01" the camera was spun around at night in a built-up area with the lens stopped right down (F11) so that all light sources (mainly streetlights) would create the trails. The image was then mirrored both horizontally and vertically to create the x4 double exposure (and hence symmetry) in PhotoShop, although no other post processing or colour enhancement was required to create the image. Finally, the "Firework Monster" was built from around 30 distant firework elements shot on a noisy November 5th and then composited in PhotoShop, with the final composite being a horizontal mirroring. |
