The base section was again constructed in plasticard (this time 2mm thick), with the edges and lower skirt filled and sanded many times to get a decent set of joints between
the angled panels (picture 1). Indeed during construction, the base was sprayed several times in grey primer (picture 2) to help improve the surface and assist in the filling and sanding
process. Twenty-eight 25mm wooden balls were then sliced in two (a swine of a job, the result being shown in picture 3), before being glued to the base section using a flexible filler (that not only made an excellent and fast adhesive, but which also helped to fill any gaps). The nearly completed base (picture 4) was then again sprayed with grey primer and once again sanded (this time to remove the wood grain raised on the hemispheres due to their first coat of paint), before the final base resulted (picture 5). This had some holes drilled in the top to accept some bolts already cast into the shoulder section, and was given a coat of paint (picture 6, and again a long job given the 56 hemispheres). |
