This image, which achieved an "honourable mention" in Caligari's November 2001 image gallery was mastered at 3000x2000 pixels in trueSpace, and was my first attempt to create a scene that looked like it was underwater. The inspiration was various shots of diving craft seen in the BBC's "The Blue Planet", and which particularly inspired the lighting frame on the front of the "diving bug". The underwater effect was achieved partly by immersing the model within a fairly dense volumetric fog, and partly by top illumination from a projector light to create the colour effects both in the "water" and on the surface of the craft (which is, in fact, almost white!). A final dim, non-volumetric blue light in the foreground lower left then brought the underbelly of the craft out of darkness, as well as creating the soft-focus (image map) shadows. |
